Overview
British Telecom needed a large-scale waste management platform to track, report, and manage waste streams across their UK operations. I led the end-to-end UX for both web and mobile, delivering a modular, accessible design that met WCAG 2.1 AA standards and integrated with BT's existing solutions architecture.
The challenge
The existing waste tracking process was manual, spreadsheet-driven, and inaccessible to field operatives on mobile. BT needed a unified digital platform that could handle complex regulatory reporting while remaining usable by non-technical staff in the field.
My role
Senior UI/UX Lead responsible for the full design scope — information architecture, responsive web and mobile UI, WCAG compliance, and solutions architecture documentation. Acted as the primary design liaison with BT's engineering and compliance teams.
Process
Discover
Embedded with BT's operations team for 2 weeks. Shadowed field operatives, interviewed compliance managers, and audited the existing spreadsheet workflows.
Architecture
Defined the information architecture for 70+ web pages and 100+ mobile screens. Created a modular page taxonomy that mapped to BT's regulatory reporting structure.
Design
Designed responsive web and mobile UI with a modular component approach. Built all screens in Figma with full annotation and interaction notes.
Accessibility
Conducted WCAG 2.1 AA audit across all screens. Remediated colour contrast, focus order, ARIA labelling, and keyboard navigation issues.
Documentation
Produced a full solutions architecture document covering data flows, integration points, and design rationale for the engineering team.
